I catch a hint of his breath and I slightly cringe…and my reaction is to hold my hand up to my mouth and nose, and let the finger nail of my pinky finger fill the ridge between my two front teeth…a tell tail sign that I am pondering something totally removed from what the speaker may be prattling on about.  But then he tells me he has 17 children and snap back in to our conversation…12 he tells me are still alive and they all have children, and some of them even have children…it’s evident he is proud of this, but has trouble adding the numbers up, and shrugs it off with a grumble about how most of them never call anyway.  I exclaim that 17 children is quite a thing and he tells me that back in the day he lived beside the railway tracks…every morning at 6 AM a train came rumbling down the tracks and shook his whole house…woke the whole damn village he says.  Then with a sly grin he adds with a bit of a huff, “…and I was not gett’n wok’n up for nothin.”
