The older sister stands as the younger elder finishes…and the weight of the matter returns to everyone in the room…she is noticeably more angry and her pause takes full affect. She looks down and forcibly taps repeatedly the back of someones cell phone on the table…we all cringe for the owner…this is shameful, she says pointing at the phone then to each of us in the room, the way we conduct ourselves there. None of you ‘follow’…adding with a poignancy that she is perhaps unaware of…and lists a number of esteemed people and ancestors. They are who we are, they are our culture and our history…our heritage….hard working people who never called another one down. One family – all of us…who looked after each other…she laments with a tone that calls all of us forward to be witness. You…she directs looking again at all of us in purposeful succession…must work harder at being a proud people; a better people; a people grounded in where you come from – a family. Work harder, she adds again passionately…this is not where we live, she declares tapping the phone again this time with even more force, and then brings her hands over her chest – her heart…this is where we live, and then states purposefully, this is your duty and responsibility.
