Do you know where we come from? The old man comes across as being gruff and cranky…but I can see the twinkle in his eye and the smile forming at the ridge of his lip. No, I reply…extend my hand, which he takes firmly and shakes, and I ask…where DO you come from? Our village was born in the heart of this foreign country because of an infidelity and murder…he offers looking up at me waiting for a reaction…but I only smile and lean in a little closer. The brother, he continues, killed his wife and her lover…and he knew that his would mean his certain death at the hands of their families…so he fled with two slave women in the fastest canoe under cover of darkness. After many days he landed here at the end of this inlet…and that is how we came to be…he finishes, lifting a hand and sweeping it from one end of the village to the other. All things start from some other thing or another…he says departing….good, bad or otherwise. Remember that.
