The smell of cooked of salmon and black cod and halibut overwhelms our senses…even in the wide open outdoor space where we have all gathered…people begin to coalesce inward, drawn closer together by the enticing aromas.  Someone wonders aloud about bears in the area being drawn to this feast too…she’s worried enough that she mentions it twice…but no one responds or acknowledges her comment.  It’s evident she not from around here and somewhat out of her element…a city slicker and dressed far too fancy…nonetheless, she is invited closer with smiles and the handing off of a paper plate.  We load our plates and pull chairs together…strangers snuggle in to connect over food…and digest along the way stories and laughter and tales – new friends are created and families extended.  An eagle circles in overhead…calls out her name and then falls away beyond the tree line.  She’s saying ‘No bears around here’…adds a local resident…and we all laugh lightly and carry on.
