Alex wakes from his nap and in the quietness calls ‘daddy up, please’…he laughs and plays with his pink spotted stuffed frog…and when I enter the room his request becomes a little more urgent, and his smile widens.  He prefers afternoon naps in his stroller to his crib…and we wrestle with the snaps on the harness to release him…together we find ourselves pushing each others fingers out of the way and giggling – finally he comes free.  After a long snuggle…perhaps tired of me kissing the top of his head and holding him tight…he crawls down off my lap, takes my finger and directs, ‘up daddy’.  He pulls and leads me to the front door where he reminds me of my promise earlier in the day…’truck, daddy’s truck’.  We assemble and don socks and shoes and jackets and head out the door…and drive about greater Victoria in daddy’s truck to his delight and constant happy chatter…then after about 2 hours Alex finally tells me, ‘home daddy’, and so we go.  I am not sure what it takes for a father to be his sons champion and hero…we are after all only just starting this journey, but today…today it seemed that I could be, and that made all the difference.
