As much as I would like to delve in to the significance of the modern structure of leadership selection in Indian country…and regardless of its evident ‘miss’ in terms of promoting a cultural and social legacy built on the foundations of our ancestry…it is nonetheless, an important measure of a Nations investment in its governance, community and people. Voting matters in elections in Indian country…not because it does or does not represent an effective modern way to capture and elevate Leaders…but more importantly because is demonstrates a peoples commitment to remain self governing. It would be my view that the act of voting is the true measure of the sanctity of the inherent right and obligation of every Indian individual to maintain and exult with their Nation…a celebration of discontent and apathy which results in the absence of voting or disengagement from this important self-determining process…is irresponsible and an offense against the duties and obligations bestowed upon all us by our ancestors.
