My son and I spend the morning unhurriedly building a set of new steps…stopping at any moment that inspires us to inspect a “BUG!”…or to otherwise eat some green grapes or just take in the warmth of the sun together.  My own father comes over and watches for a bit as we go about the task of getting steps level and rise-over-run just right for our 3 step job…I explain all the details and measurements to my 2 year old son, and show him how to use a square for straight lines and even calculations for the stringers, treads and risers…he listens and watches like it matters and he understands – and this is magical to me.  Momentarily he his is inspired by my hammer and then the drill and then a screw driver and so on…bringing them to me one by one until my toolbox is near completely empty…and just for fun I send him looking for “blue-berry saw”, which he does for almost 5 whole minutes, lol.  The 40 minute task  of building those stairs takes close to 4 hours to complete…and when it’s all done we sit upon them and eat cold cereal with blackberries in the warmth of the sun…son leaning into father, and father leaning into son – most proud of our accomplishment and time well spent.
