I drive by this old…I think pretty much dead cedar tree every day, which still stands about 40 feet tall and has sometime ago in its distant past had the top portion snapped off…in its prime I am sure it must have been well over 75 feet in height.  Near the top of the tree, just below the jagged evidence of its past trauma…there is a deeply carved arrow pointing up towards the heavens – or just ‘up’ for the more pragmatic.  What strikes me as interesting about this matter, in addition to the fact that the effort took place about 40 ft above the ground on a back road hardly traveled, on a dead Cedar tree, and that the carving itself appears to have been undertaken with great care and precision – the depth of the carving reaches at least to the core of the Cedar…is the fact that someone had the motivation, drive and passion to create this symbol.  What’s illusive to me though is the meaning and purpose of the symbolism…it seems a tremendous effort and in many ways obscure…so I am little perplexed and yet intrigued.  I am left with the observation nonetheless that I trust it has met its creators expectations and intent, and that the rational for all the energy and resources expended to create it were well worth it…justified somehow.  Still, I suppose…if its entire purpose were simply to catch the eye of a single passerby and have the carving appear on their blog attempting to decipher the oddity…it may very well  have been a smashing success.
