Ben Wilson slid to a stop and watched Siobhán cascade over the edge and plummet out of his sight.  Cautiously he approached to look over and down in to the ravine.  Mist from the waterfall whited out the bottom and he could not make out her twisted and broken body he’d hoped would be there.  He could see nothing, nothing at all, and this further frustrated and irritated him.

He holstered his side-arm.

Fuck me, he said gritting his teeth.

Come think about it he’d heard no scream or sound of impact either.  Though, he thought looking to the waterfall and finally registering the noise of is crashing water below, any sounds would have been muffled and even completely cancelled.  Still something was not right, everything about this pursuit had felt wrong…just slightly off…enough that the whole situation left him feeling exposed and vulnerable.  A feeling he was not used to experiencing.

He looked harder into the mist – still he could see nothing.

No matter, he thought, trying to find some resolution to everything that was bothering him, and not being able to see Siobhán body below.  He knew from his recon that the rocks below were large and jagged; the whole terrain was impassable and hostile.  From this point the river and waterfall pool were at least ten meters from the face of the ravine, it was shallow and too far to reach anyway. No one survives that kind of fall, and even if they did live through the initial impact the trauma and elements would bring a quick end. She’s dead.

Good bye Siobhán, he said out loud.

Ben Wilson turned away from the ravine and disappeared back into the forest.
