There is no cover from the rain…the streets are hard and dirty, and littered with broken souls trying to find shelter in doorways and building crevices…no one looks up, and the other passers-by stare vacantly forward as if we are all alone and each desperate to find our way out of this mess.  Resigned to the anticipated voluminous water soaking in to my clothes and feeling the weight of it…I slow my pace and decide to take much more deliberate steps forward…this place is treacherous and dangerous, and it would be better that my faculties stay focused on navigating through and away from this scene.  Each step reduces the distance between me and my destination…the safety of warmth and the embrace of dry clothes, and the retreat from the hardness of this city…and even while in the moment I am focused on the immediacy of escape, my lingering thoughts of the days earlier events are beacons of promise that carry me forward.

About Lawrence Lewis

I do a number of things professionally...but most of all and the true purpose of what I do through "my work" is to provide for my family, be a good husband and great father, and try to make a difference as a world citizen...I guess it's not much more complicated than that 🙂
