It’s early…the sun is just coming over the skyline and its warmth through the small window feels nice…I lean back into the seat, settling in for the journey.  At first the screams and cries are muted by distance…muffled by the fuselage and passage ways beyond the plane…but it’s getting closer. Lucy enters and her screams and cries pierce the calm of the cabin…her mother immediately senses its impact, like an echo bouncing back and resonating somehow amplified…she snaps aloud to her daughter and we all learn her name.  Lucy is unfazed, if not now even more defiant of her mother and the situation…but an amazing thing happens and it only takes 12 rows.  One by one, as Lucy is reluctantly nudged down the narrow isle by her over burdened and apologetic mom…smiling, pleasant faces present themselves and say, “Good morning Lucy.”  The chorus builds momentum and Lucy relinquishes…her screams surrender to these strangers kindness…and by the 12th row she returns the sentiment with a humble and shy “good morning” of her own.  16 rows and more than 40 ‘good mornings’ later…Lucy and her mom settle in to their seats relaxed and calm, smiling and happy…and so were the rest of us!
