First Nation Elections often seem to be stressful and high-anxiety times for aboriginal communities…why is that? You know the answer of course, and for every community their are unique reasons and histories that have created these challenges…some real and most purely a function of assumptions and antiquated election processes, procedures and practices. There are of course ways and strategies to change this…to bring back a sense of community, trust and purpose in your elections…and it all begins with implementing a bit of planning and communication strategy well in advance. Regardless of what your Election Code or Regulations may require – consider these timelines and conditions and requirements as the minimum standards to be achieved. My suggestion is to re-frame expectations from a modern communications and technology perspective and demand more out of your next Election in terms of community engagement, participation and dialogue. These are important times for Indian people…and in my view there is not a more important time of Nation building and self determination than when we select our Leadership.
