At the beach in the hot sun our cold apples taste exquisite…Kate chomps veraciously and gets spraying juices up her nose and over a cheek, and even across an eyebrow…we laugh at the peculiarity of it, and then even more so when she snorts.  We talk about the directions of north and south prompted by the Canadian geese flying low overhead…and when I ask her which way is east she points correctly and then declares west without prompting…she tosses her apple core down the beach for the two waiting seagulls, just as I had done a few moments earlier.  Together we sort through ancient middens of busted seashells and find a select few to claim as our own…I tell her about the Malahat people and how this is there home…and she asks to meet the Chief again. So hand-in-hand we walk back up the hill to the Nation’s Administration Office to do exactly that…talking along the way about baby dragons of Vale and all the innocent distractions of youth…delighting in the much needed company of the other.

About Lawrence Lewis

I do a number of things professionally...but most of all and the true purpose of what I do through "my work" is to provide for my family, be a good husband and great father, and try to make a difference as a world citizen...I guess it's not much more complicated than that 🙂
