It’s an interesting paradox…casting ballots in Indian country to elect its leadership…its contrary to the principles of traditional and cultural practice and preference. Still, I am not sure how else it might be done given the evolution of our old ways…all the new modern influences of technologies and the global influences of endless alternative cultures and other social dynamics…not to mention media, corporate, social and religious and political agendas writ large. It seems a bit irrational and misconceived to think that we will ever be able to return our old ways and traditional practices of selecting leadership…it also remains unsatisfactory to engage wholly and with abandon the western system of democratic process…both in my view are flawed for many obvious reasons and a few more subtle ones as well. I don’t preach or profess to have the answer, or any one solution that fits all…but it seems to me that the ideal solution to leadership selection is a hybrid of the two…not so much because our times demand it, but more because it would be the better solution for Indian people.
