I am sitting in the bar and thinking about what to order…I feel compelled to order something and having owned a couple pubs it seems a bit rude not to…and after three polite visits from the waitress I decide on a vodka paralyzer – don’t ask me why. The bar smells like burnt smoky wood…like the smell of a camp fire just after you put it out with river water…and it’s way to bright to feel cozy and warm and inviting. I leave my jacket on. There are 3 young men in one corner debating something about the legitimacy of some discipline metered out by their boss…a little too drunk to make much sense, but still planning some recompense and just drunk enough that it will mean very little by sunrise. Behind me an older fella cusses at the football game on a TV and laughs a grinding guttural hollow series of snorts when the waitress asks him to keep it down…she asks me if I want another and I smile my decline, opting for the cold Strongbow in my hotel room…I finish my drink and decide to leave it at that.
